Ristretto, the UK’s premiere event coffee company, recently produced an amazing 150 espressos in just five minutes to coincide with the timing of a speech given at a conference for the Advertising Association.

“This was a last minute request. The theme of the speech was ‘Wake up and smell the coffee’ and each espresso cup was branded with that message. The speaker wanted the delegates to start receiving the espressos just as he reached the part of the speech where he was delivering this message,” said Ristretto’s managing director Joseph O’Hara.

“It was a great idea – but it needed to be executed well or it would have fallen flat. Having produced 480 espressos previously in 15 minutes after dinner for a blue chip financial client, I was confident we would be able to deliver.

“You need to have a clearly defined plan of action and a well trained, well practised team. We did a trial run before the event to ensure we could produce 150 properly extracted espressos, with no quality compromise in the time available.

“Having worked closely with the agency Space who were running the event, we were able to ensure that everything was planned properly and the event was a great success.”

For further information on the event, please see the following press release:

Ristretto, the UK’s premiere coffee events company, has just returned back to base after serving coffee backstage to the artists at Glastonbury for the fourth time.

Ristretto once again impressed the stars with their latte art and superb coffee.

“It’s always pleasing and somewhat surprising that even big stars are surprised to get really impressive coffee backstage,” noted Ristretto’s managing director Joseph O’Hara.

“Even some of the very big names have obviously not seen latte art before. I even had the opportunity to give Alex James from Blur a quick demonstration on how to pour latte art.

“People are always surprised that coffee is such a big feature backstage. Glastonbury’s main stages have performances from 11am and some of the big acts have technicians and staff backstage from the early hours of the morning.

“As you can imagine, coffee is essential right up until the last band go on. This year, though, we did reopen the bar for a last minute espresso for Clarence Clemons of the E Street Band.”

For further information about coffee at events, coffee training or our roasted coffee please see our speak to Joseph O’Hara on 020 8540 0167, 07766 703 498 or email us at info@ristretto.com.

Ristretto, the UK’s premiere event coffee specialist, was recently able to staff and supply nine coffee bars in nine separate London locations for a one day radio launch at virtually no notice.
The PR company NDL had arranged another coffee company to provide coffee bars for their event – who unfortunately let them down at the last minute. Ristretto were contacted on Wednesday afternoon for an event that was going live first thing on Monday morning.

“At the time of the request, the event was a matter of days away, and we had a large number of our own espresso machines and grinders in mainland Europe for events – leaving us several machines and grinders short“ noted Ristretto’s managing director, Joseph O’Hara.
“It was clearly time to call in some friends. Luckily we have great relationships with La Spaziale UK and London School of Coffee, and within a few short calls we were able to source the equipment we needed.
“The logistics on the day were complicated, as you can imagine. Some difficulties were encountered with access to sites, but we were able to overcome these problems to provide a seamless service.
“All the clients were wowed with the taste of the coffee and some amazing latte art.”
Lauren Beer of NDL, who contracted Ristretto to provide the coffee service, noted:

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for everything - you have been truly brilliant and absolutely saved our bacon at the eleventh hour! I honestly don’t know how we could have done it without you - the bars all looked fantastic and the baristas were all brilliant at their jobs. I really can’t thank you enough.”

Joe O’Hara concluded: “We were very happy with how the event worked out –challenges presented by events like this certainly help to keep us on our game.”

Ristretto, the UK’s premiere coffee events company, is proud to congratulate one of our lead baristas, John Gordon, for winning the UK Latte Art competition for 2009.

Competing recently at SCAE World Latte Art Competition UK Final at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, John came first out of nine competitors. The competitors each had to make two macchiatos, two cappuccinos and two speciality drinks in ten minutes. Not only did each drink have to be decorated with free–poured latte art, but each pair of drinks was judged against a photo of the intended design that the Barista had to submit to the judges before competing.
Having competed earlier this year in the UK Barista Championships for the first time and making it to the semi-final, John was keen to try his hand at the Latte Art championships as well. Many hours of dedicated practice both in and out of work have clearly paid off.
As the UK’s current Latte Art champion, John will attend and compete in the 6th World Latte Art Championship during June 26-28 at SCAE Wonderful Coffee in Cologne Germany.

We wish John the best of luck in the final and wish we could be there to cheer him on – but the timing coincides with running the coffee bars backstage in the dressing rooms at Glastonbury for the fourth year running.

Rarely served and even more rarely served well, exactly what defines a ristretto is not always agreed upon in the world of specialty coffee. But what a ristretto aims to be and should be, is the best of the best - the finest and purest expression of the coffee experience.

Technically, a ristretto, (Italian for restricted) is an extremely short coffee drink, even more concentrated than a traditional espresso shot.

It’s the purest form of espresso coffee, producing only around 0.5 to 0.75 ounces of coffee in around 25 seconds extraction time – around half the volume of a single espresso shot, yet produced in the same time.

In a ristretto shot, there is nowhere to hide. Any imperfection in the beans or the preparation will be accentuated in the taste. But when it all comes together – an excellent blend, well roasted, well stored and well prepared – it can be the most sublime coffee. Devoid of bitterness, rich in sweetness and flavour, it’s the sort of drink that makes you realise why people drink coffee. It’s that rare occasion when the coffee tastes as good as the aroma that drew you to it originally.

A ristretto then, is the purest, finest expression of the coffee experience, and the perfect name for a company that delivers this to your event or workplace.

Ristretto, the UK’s premiere event coffee company, recently produced an amazing 480 espressos in just 15 minutes at a dinner service for a blue chip financial sector client.

“Many people within the coffee industry have told me that you can’t offer after dinner espresso on a large scale, but you can and we’ve done it,” said Ristretto’s managing director Joseph O’Hara.

“You need to have a clearly defined plan of action and a well trained, well practised team. A single barista able to make a great cup of coffee is one thing - but for this task you need to have a team of baristas each making 100 great coffees. We did a trial run before the event to ensure we could produce 480 properly extracted espressos, with no quality compromise in the time available.

“You also need to have buy-in and commitment from the food caterer. For this event we were working in partnership with Rhubarb, one of the UK’s top caterers who provided the overall catering for the dinner.

“Rhubarb were great: they understood the complexity of the problem and we had a planning meeting where we were able to discuss the logistics of the event, like the need to have large numbers of waiters ready to take the freshly prepared espressos directly to the right table. This is crucial, as espresso has to be served as soon as it’s made.

Ristretto will provide two identical mobile bars for the competition. Made from stainless steel and translucent polycarbonate, they feature programmable LED lighting that can be remotely activated to change the bar’s appearance to any of 16 different colours.

“We are very happy to be bar sponsors for the UKBC,” said Ristretto’s managing director Joseph O’Hara. “It’s a great competition bringing together the best baristas in the UK and they deserve to be competing on the best bars.”

“We operate a fleet of mobile coffee bars designed specifically for the event industry. Over the years we’ve incorporated features into the design of the bars to make them not only stylish and attractive, but practical too, and a real pleasure to work from.

“All of our mobile coffee bars are purpose designed, self contained barista stations. They have clean and waste water storage as well as internal pump and filter equipment to ensure the quality of the water used. They are designed to be highly mobile and able to be set up quickly – perfect for a competition with six regional heats and a final at Hotelympia.

“Safety is a prime concern with water and electricity so each bar is RCD protected for the safety of customers and staff. The bars even cut power to the coffee machine if you run out of water to protect the equipment!”

Ristretto has also provided coffee to the artists backstage at Live 8! and Glastonbury, and for clients including O2, Microsoft, Armani, Habitat, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and numerous others.

Ristretto, the UK’s premiere event coffee company, has once again provided a full service espresso bar for the artists at Glastonbury’s main stage.

“We had a great time again this year,” commented Joseph O’Hara, managing director of the company.

“There’s always a great buzz backstage at Glastonbury, and seriously good coffee is something of a necessity for the artists and their crews.

“It’s great to see the look on someone’s face when they’ve trekked through the rain and the mud to find a shiny espresso bar – and then you hand them a freshly made cappuccino, complete with latte art.”

Ristretto used the mud and the rain of Glastonbury as a ‘trial by fire’ for their new ‘Chameleon bar’.

Joseph O’Hara noted:

“Our new bar – which we collected brand new from our fabricators on our way to set up at Glastonbury – features dramatic programmable LED lighting which can be set to any one of 17 different colours – or can smoothly blend between all of them. The colours can be changed instantly by remote control.

“The bar performed flawlessly throughout the event despite the adverse conditions.”

Serving at the bar this year were Joseph O’Hara, marketing director Anne O’Hara, and lead barista David Cormack.

“Once again,” said Joseph O’Hara, “we feel we’ve lived up to the comment from a member of the White Stripes crew at the last Glastonbury that we were a “shining beacon of civilisation in a sea of mud”.”

Ristretto has also provided coffee to the artists backstage for Live 8!, and has provided coffee for clients including O2, Microsoft, Armani, Habitat, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and numerous others.
